Start Simple, Scale Smart
Every startup faces the same infrastructure dilemma: build for scale from day one, or keep it simple and refactor later?
At Floures Technologies, we advocate for a progressive architecture approach — start with the simplest thing that works, but make decisions that don't paint you into a corner.
The Three Phases of Startup Infrastructure
Phase 1: Launch (0-1K users)
Keep it dead simple:
- Single container on AWS ECS Fargate or a single EC2 instance
- Managed PostgreSQL via RDS (t3.micro is fine)
- S3 + CloudFront for static assets
- GitHub Actions for CI/CD
Total monthly cost: $30-50/month
The goal here is shipping speed, not architectural elegance.
Phase 2: Growth (1K-100K users)
Time to separate concerns:
- Container orchestration with ECS or Kubernetes
- Read replicas for your database
- Redis for caching and session management
- Application Load Balancer for traffic distribution
- Auto-scaling based on CPU/memory metrics
Phase 3: Scale (100K+ users)
Now you need serious infrastructure:
- Multi-AZ deployments for high availability
- Event-driven architecture with SQS/SNS
- CDN at the edge for global performance
- Observability stack: CloudWatch, X-Ray, structured logging
- Infrastructure as Code with Terraform (we use this ourselves!)
Key Principles
1. Managed Services Over Self-Hosted
Let AWS handle the undifferentiated heavy lifting:
- RDS over self-managed PostgreSQL
- ElastiCache over self-managed Redis
- SES over self-managed email servers
2. Twelve-Factor App Methodology
Store config in environment variables. Keep your application stateless. Treat logs as event streams.
3. Cost Awareness from Day One
Set up AWS Cost Explorer and billing alerts immediately. Use Spot Instances for non-critical workloads. Right-size your instances monthly.
Real Example: Our Trading Gateway
Our own Trading Gateway service follows this exact pattern:
- Spring Boot backend on a single OCI instance
- PostgreSQL database with Flyway migrations
- React dashboard served via Nginx
- Docker Compose for orchestration
- Terraform for infrastructure management
Simple, effective, and easy to maintain.
Conclusion
The best architecture is one your team can understand, deploy, and debug at 2 AM. Start simple, measure everything, and scale the bottlenecks — not the entire system.
